ADVANCES IN INFERTILITY TREATMENTS FROM THE TOP COLORADO CLINIC
Fertility treatments have undergone nothing short of a revolutionary series of advancements since the first successful in vitro fertilization in 1977. In the past decade, a number of hurdles to infertility that were previously thought to be insurmountable have been solved. One of the major watersheds in this field was the development of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ISCI). Before this method was developed, couples with male factor infertility often had to deal with unsuccessful treatments. Before this process, physicians could only expose eggs to sperm and hope that fertilization would be successful. The development of ISCI changed this.
ISCI is a process used during the IVF process, but one in which an embryologist will inject a single, healthy sperm into the center of the egg, rather than simply exposing the egg to sperm. ISCI has a fertilization rate of about 70 percent – despite the often poor quality of the sperm. If the woman has healthy eggs, ISCI is effective as much as 99% of the time; and in men with healthy sperm, the success rate is equal to that of men with a normal sperm count.
What developments can we expect moving forward?
Research and development of infertility treatments is one of the most rapidly developing sectors of the health care industry. Advancements that were unheard of a generation ago are now commonplace and scientists are continuing to make strides in the areas of reproductive endocrinology and infertility every year. Here are some of the developments we can expect to see on the horizon:
- Fewer multiple births due to infertility treatments. As IVF techniques continue to improve, the option to transplant only one embryo at a time will be more available, which will reduce the rates of multiple births during IVF.
- More donor and surrogates available. Third-party parenting and egg and sperm donation have lost the stigma associated with them in the past. This means that as more people become donors and surrogates, the option of third-party reproduction will be increasingly available.
- The end of infertility? Stem cell research continues to make leaps and bounds, and we are rapidly moving toward a time when pluriopotent cells can be developed from skin cells and bone marrow cells. While the end of infertility is still a ways off, we may yet see it in our lifetime.
